The new 10 minute coronavirus lateral flow test uses antibodies that are specific for immune glycoproteins that are produced by infected individuals in response to the new coronavirus. These glycoproteins are called Immunoglobulin M and G (IgM and IgG). Immunoglobulins are normally produced by the immune system in response to bacterial or viral infections and act to ‘flag’ the pathogen, so that other immune cells can detect and kill it. The IgG/IgM that the test detects are specific to the SARS-CoV-2 virus, so a positive result would indicate the patient has contracted COVID-19.
The new test has the following specifications:
IgG / IgM
Sensitivity = 97.4% / Sensitivity = 86.8%
Specificity = 99.3% / Specificity = 98.6%
Accuracy = 98.9% / Accuracy = 96.1%
By using two independent test lines, the accuracy is combined for a 99.996% accuracy when both lines are present.

FastStream One-Minute Prep and 5 minute qPCR(™) kits

A lab sample tube containing sample conditioning enzymes and reagents, into which the PCR reagent containing the synthetic replicase sequence is added and the sample can then proceed to RT-PCR without further delay. The processing is reduced to a single step, with the normal vortex mixing before and after, cutting the lab process time down from almost an hour less than a minute from sample arrive to being in the qPCR cycler.

The process flow for FastStream(™) qPCR viral release buffer is simply:
  1. Receive the swab sample via any VTM, etc.,
  2. Vortex for 15 sec the sample tube as received
  3. Transfer 100ul FastStream qPCR in an empty microcentrifuge tube
  4. Add an equal amount (100ul) from the sample to the microcentrifuge tube
  5. Vortex for 15 sec
  6. 200ul mixture is ready for the RT-qPCR process,  which with the Deep Life EasyFlow(™) process takes just five minutes and involves adding 2.5ul of the Oligo and Primer mixes then 5ul of sample, vortexing, then into a thermocycler machine.

This is FastStream(™) distributed in transport tubes. This means:

  1. Staff can use sample tubes directly for transport, reducing the amount of contaminated waste to dispose of.
  2. The transport tubes no longer contain Medium! In Medium, the virus is kept alive, but in the Instasafe(™) tube, the virus is broken into sections by the R1 and R2 reagents to remove the genetic material. As the virus has been broken up, there is no contamination risk for the user! his means the lab does not require strict biohazard control measures to process the samples, only measures to prevent cross contamination of samples.
  3. It eliminates the “inactivation step” that takes around 30 minutes in alternative processes.
  4. This tube contains the extraction kit already. So no need for any additional extraction kit.
  5. As the extraction process occurs during transport, the test can go directly to qPCR as soon as the tube enters the lab, saving the extraction time. The result is only one process step is needed to neutralise the reagents, which can be done in a few minutes: a huge saving compared to the conventional two main steps with their six subsidiary actions that that take up to an hour.
